Assoc. prof. Pakhomenko has commenced his course Historical Narratives in Propaganda: Cases studies of Russia and Ukraine in autumn semester for FSS 3rd year Journalism and Multimedium Production module students as well as Erasmus students.

Instrumentalizing history and using it to achieve political goals has long been a common practice. The rhetoric of Kremlin propagandists and Putin in particular about the absence of national traditions in Ukraine, the absence of Ukrainians as a nation and their unity with Russians, framing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is a clear example of how history is used not only in foreign policy, but also in aggressive actions against a sovereign state. The subject course focuses on the following topics:

  • how propaganda manipulates history;
  • how the mindset of a society can be influenced by history,
  • how the identity can be formed or destroyed by history,
  • how the present events and vision of tomorrow can be justified by history utilizing propaganda.

Assoc. pro. Pakhomenko has a PhD in history (Institute of History of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2003) MA in history, Mariupol State University (1996)). He has previously given lectures in such courses in other universities:
