Dr. Ieva Birka and Dr. Didzis Kļaviņš receive funding in the 2023 competition "Project Support Facility" (PSF) of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) for their project “Prepared Together: Stronger Together”.

The project will be implemented under the leadership of LU SZF researcher Ieva Birka, with participation of Didzis Kļaviņš (LU SZF), and two international experts - Dr. Mikael Wigell from the Finnish Foreign Policy Institute and Alexandra M. Friede from Helmut Schmidt University in Germany. This year's project competition focused on the CBSS long-term priority “Safe and Secure Region”, more specifically on managing increasing risks for states and societies, including those resulting from climate change, and building more resilient communities. In total, 20 project applications were submitted in the CBSS project competition, and 6 of them received funding. The project "Prepared Together: Stronger Together" will launch on October 1, 2023 and will last until September 30, 2025.

The main goal of this project is to promote better preparedness for a changing security environment by ensuring inter-regional cooperation between disaster preparedness experts in the North Baltic, Central Baltic, and South Baltic. The project will promote the cooperation of experts in the region and create a platform where innovative approaches and best practices for increasing preparedness among citizens will be exchanged. The concerns of Finnish, Latvian and German residents and their existing level of preparedness will be established. The results and best practice approaches will be shared with national government bodies responsible for disaster preparedness, as well as with citizens and disaster preparedness experts in other Baltic countries to promote a coordinated regional response. The consultations will provide recommendations to state administrations regarding new risks and practical solutions.
